Assignment 1 thoughts

The first assignment for my LCC MA was a brief on ‘People at work’. I chose 3 different types of people:

  • Drug dealer
  • Natal Sharks board marine conversation team
  • Make-up Artist

What was technically hard about this assignment was the initial constraints placed on us by Paul. I understand that the restraints on lens length (35mm or 50mm) and film ISO (400, no pushing). This actually put more pressure on me than I would have liked. With digital, you have the ability to increase the ISO rating to ensure you get the aperture/shutter speed required.

With my drug dealer shoot, it was done in a dark room, for obvious reasons, and this didn’t help with the overall look and feel as I had to shoot at f2/30th to get enough light onto the film. This meant that some shots had some serious depth of field, when I would have liked a little more detail on the background.

The second person at work concentrated on the Natal Sharks Board team. They are responsible for ensuring that the shark nets in Durban are functional and also that no marine life has been caught in them. I went out with one of the boats and struggled to get close shots of them working, due to the limitation of a 35/50mm lens.

For the final person at work, I chose to document the life of a Make-up artist. I shot with the Canon g9, and whilst a handy little point and shoot, it’s rather crap at depth of field, so when I did need the background to be not as busy as the subject, it was pretty hard to achieve.

Overall it was a good assignment and one that’s spun off a new story for me to pursue.
